Sound Design, Field Recording, Noise Making

GameSoundDemo

Hello there!

As a major fan of the Borderlands series, I have always admired its extraordinarily crafted sound design. I was amazed by the technological feat of the randomized gun system, especially in terms of its sound design. With over a billion possibilities of guns, how does one even begin designing the sound for them?

To showcase my sound design skills, I decided to take 15 weapons from Borderlands 3 and do a redesign of the sounds in order to showcase the different types of guns, manufacturers, elements, etc. I wanted to challenge myself with this redesign, so I decided to only use sounds I have recorded, specifically sounds found from within my apartment (as well as some classrooms from my alma mater). No real guns or library recordings were used!

After finishing the designs, I implemented the sounds into Wwise and emulated the randomization of the gun generation system by using a variety of designed parts and elements of each gun.

Here is the finished sound redesign:

The design was a fun challenge, especially with the sheer amount of weaponry and all of their unique attributes.

The next step was to take one of the guns (I chose the sniper rifle) and implement it into Wwise.

Here is that process and the finished result, as well as the rest of the process for analyzing and designing the gun sounds:

The following is a video of all of the different source recordings I did for these redesigns. It was not easy to emulate a gunshot without guns, but thankfully I did not get any noise complaints from my neighbors.

I hope you enjoyed the redesigns as well as the process just as much as I enjoyed creating them!
